Bow House is a contemporary Net-Zero retreat designed for a small family of theatre and video makers whose work blends satire, storytelling, and performance. The home operates not only as a residence, but as a continually evolving stage set — a place where nature, architecture, and creative practice intersect.

Whimsical and introspective, the project functions as an extended proscenium: a curved opaque stenographic wall held in tension with a flat, lens-like aperture that frames views to the forest and terrace. The result is a living environment where theatre unfolds continuously even in absence, as light shifts, storms move across the canopy, and seasonal changes transform the wooded landscape into an ever-changing backdrop.

Architectural Concept

The defining gesture of Bow House is the bow-shaped form, which choreographs movement across the site and frames the gradual unveiling of the forest. As visitors approach from above, the curve appears carved into the slope before slipping quietly into the surrounding woodland.

The bowed roof responds to the geometry below, dipping as it meets the curved wall and forming a natural scupper that directs rainwater. Interior spaces expand along the slope, creating a spatial spectrum from intimate to open.

The primary living area is articulated by a long linear stair — functioning as both circulation and a ‘gradin’ or viewing platform — allowing occupants to sit, gather, and observe the theatre of the woods beyond. This linear element extends through the home as a continuous cabinetry wall connecting public and private zones.

Spatial Organization

Two projecting wings contain the private bedrooms and ensuites, each oriented toward its own portion of forest to create moments of quiet immersion. These wings support the central performance space — a shared environment for reflection, gathering, and creative work.

Entry occurs through a carved punctuation within the curved wall. Small circular apertures offer glimpses outward before revealing a compressed ante room with a low ceiling. From here, the interior expands upward and outward, stepping down with the natural topography and drawing the forest visually into the home.

Cedar shingles wrap the bow, creating a tactile, shadowed surface that reinforces the dialogue between architecture and landscape.
